Instant E-PAN User Manual

 1. Overview

The Instant e-PAN service is available to all Individual taxpayers, who have not been allotted a Permanent Account Number (PAN) but possess Aadhaar and access to DigiLocker for fetching documents related to valid proof of Date of Birth upon obtaining the applicant’s consent. 

The applicant shall select any one of the prescribed documents available on the Digi Locker platform as valid proof of Date of Birth:
1.  Birth Certificate issued by a Municipal Authority or any office authorized to issue birth and death certificates, or by the Registrar of Births and Deaths, or the Indian Consulate
2.  Matriculation Certificate
3.  Driving License
4.  Matriculation Marksheet issued by a recognized board
5.  Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) Card

Using Instant e-PAN pre-login service, you can:
1.  Obtain digitally signed PAN in electronic format, free of cost, with the help of Aadhaar and your mobile number linked with Aadhaar 
2.  Create e-Filing account based on e-KYC details after allotment, and
3.  Check status of pending e-PAN request / Download e-PAN either before or after logging in to the e-Filing portal.

2. Pre-requisites for availing this service

•  Individual who has not been allotted a PAN
•  Valid Aadhaar and mobile number linked to Aadhaar and access to Digi locker
•  User not a minor as on date of request; and
•  User not covered under the definition of Representative Assessee u/s 160 of the Income Tax Act,1961 or u/s 303 of Income Tax Act, 2025

3. Step-by-Step Guide

3.1 Generate New e-PAN

Step 1: Go to the e-Filing portal homepage.

Step 2: On the ‘e-PAN’ page, click ‘Get New e-PAN’.

Step 3: On the Get New e-PAN page, confirm the declaration checkbox for consent for the generation of a new PAN based on Digi Locker data and Aadhaar e-KYC details, and click ‘Continue’.

Step 4: Click “Continue” you will be redirected to access the Digi Locker platform for fetching Date of Birth details and supporting proof.

Step 5: Enter the Aadhaar / VID number, captcha code and click Next.

Please Note: VID (Virtual ID) is a temporary 16-digit number from UIDAI you can use instead of your Aadhaar number for authentication/e-KYC. It’s valid for 1 day and you can regenerate it anytime free of cost.

To get it:
•⁠  ⁠Online: UIDAI website → Virtual ID option → enter Aadhaar number + captcha → OTP to registered mobile → VID generated instantly
•⁠  SMS: Send ⁠ GVID ⁠ + last 4 digits of Aadhaar (e.g., ⁠ GVID 1234 ⁠) to 1947 from your registered mobile

Step 6: Enter the OTP sent to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar and click continue.

Step 7: Enter your 6-digit security PIN and click Continue.

Please Note:

DigiLocker Security PIN is a 6-digit code you set when you first registered with DigiLocker — it’s separate from your Aadhaar number, OTP, or password, and it’s used specifically to log in quickly without needing an OTP each time.

If you don’t remember PIN:

Just click “Forgot security PIN?” → verify via OTP sent to your registered mobile/email → set a new 6-digit PIN → use it to log in.

Step 8: Select the documents to be shared with Income Tax Department for proof of date of birth. Click Allow

Note: 

•  You can select multiple documents and also you can edit the consent validity date.
•  If multiple documents are selected, documents will be sorted alphabetically, and the first document will be used as proof of DOB

Step 9: On the Aadhaar validation page, enter the Aadhaar Number for PAN allotment and click generate OTP.

If your Aadhaar details are not matching with the Digi locker details, it will show below error:

If PAN is already allotted and link with the Aadhaar or link with some other PAN, it will show below error:

Step 10: Enter the OTP received on Aadhaar registered Mobile no. and click continue

Note:

•  OTP will be valid for 15 minutes only.
•  You have 3 attempts to enter the correct OTP.
•  The OTP expiry countdown timer on screen tells you when the OTP will expire.
•  On clicking Resend OTP, a new OTP will be generated and sent.

Step 11: On the Aadhaar Details page, enter father’s name and confirm the checkbox ‘I Accept that’ and click ‘Submit’.

Note 2:

•  Linking / Validating email ID (registered with your Aadhaar) is optional.
•  If you have updated your email ID in Aadhaar but it has not been validated, click Validate Email. On the Validate Email ID page, enter the 6-digit OTP received on your mobile number linked with Aadhaar and click Continue.
•  If you have not updated your email ID in Aadhaar, click Link Email ID. On the Validate Email ID page, enter the 6-digit OTP received on your mobile number linked with Aadhaar and click Continue.

On successful submission, a success message is displayed along with an Acknowledgement Number. Please keep a note of the Acknowledgement Number for future reference. You will also receive a confirmation message on your mobile number linked with Aadhaar.

3.2 Check status of pending e-PAN request / Create e-Filing Portal account / Download e-PAN

Step 1: Go to the e-Filing portal homepage.

Step 2: On the ‘e-PAN’ page, click ‘Continue’ on the Check Status / Download e-PAN tile.

Step 3: On the Check status / Download e-PAN page, enter your 12-digit Aadhaar and click ‘Continue’.

Step 4: On the ‘OTP Validation’ page, enter the 6-digit OTP received on your mobile number registered with Aadhaar and click ‘Validate Aadhaar OTP and Continue’.

•  OTP will be valid for 15 minutes only.
•  You have 3 attempts to enter the correct OTP.
•  The OTP expiry countdown timer on screen tells you when the OTP will expire.
•  On clicking Resend OTP, a new OTP will be generated and sent.

Step 5: On the Current status of your e-PAN request page, you will be able to see the status of your e-PAN request. In case the new e-PAN has been generated and allotted, click ‘View e-PAN’ to view or ‘Download e-PAN’ to download a copy. Click ‘Create e-Filing Account’ to register on the e-Filing portal.

Note: If did not validate your email ID (as per your Aadhaar KYC) when generating your e-PAN, or while updating PAN details, it is compulsory to do so during registration.

3.3 Download e-PAN – Post Login

Step 1: Log in to the e-Filing portal using your User ID and password.

You need to Register yourself on the e-Filing portal after receiving e-Pan. Only after successful registration, you can log in to the e-filing portal.

Refer to the Register for e-Filing (Taxpayer) user manual to learn more.

Step 2: On your Dashboard, click ‘Services’ > ‘View / Download e-PAN’.

Step 3: On the Enter ‘Aadhaar Number’ page, enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and click ‘Continue’.
